About the Jembatan Poetry Society...

Jembatan Poetry Society started life as the Ganesha Poetry Society named for the elephant-headed god. Anton Alimin founded Ganesha in the winter of 1991 with an important group of supporters including Ketha Carter, Greg Raymond, Henny Kwee and Simon Williams. Ganesha meetings welcomed all comers and Jembatan retains this welcoming and open approach. Jembatan developed from the Ganesha Society and meetings initially were held in Anton’s home in North Caulfield.
Jembatan retains the patterns of these early days, those attending bring a piece of poetry in English or Bahasa Indonesia to read. Some choose to play some music. Poetry is not limited to the English or Indonesian language, Jembatan has been gifted with music and poetry from a multitude of different languages. For language learners, especially those learning Bahasa Indonesia, Jembatan offers the chance to practice your new language with other students, teachers and native speakers. Jembatan poetry readings are also an opportunity for a 'malam ngobrol' or 'discussion evening'.
Gold coins and donations of the night will be donated to orphans in Indonesia.
